DHEC to hold Public Meeting in Aiken to Discuss Groundwater Capacity Use

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) will host a public meeting Thursday, Feb. 8 to provide Aiken county residents the opportunity to ask questions and discuss groundwater withdrawal data for Aiken County.

The meeting will be held at the Aiken Electric Co-op, located at 2790 Wagener Rd in Aiken. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Registered groundwater withdrawers, local governments, organizations and other interested parties are invited to participate in the discussion.

The meeting is being held as part of a series to discuss the preliminary assessment of groundwater conditions in the proposed Western Capacity Use Area, which includes Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Lexington and Orangeburg counties.

The Groundwater Use and Reporting Program issues Groundwater Use Withdrawal Permits to all groundwater systems located in a designated Capacity Use Area. Groundwater withdrawal permits are required to withdraw and use groundwater equal to or greater than three million gallons in any month in the counties in these areas.

More information about DHEC's Capacity Use Program can be found on DHEC's website.
