Latest Update
EPA will resume response efforts Monday, September 9, 2019, and continue operations to meet the objective of protecting human health and the environment by working to extinguish the fire and reduce the risk of reignition.
SC DHEC will continue to support this effort and will be re-establishing our air sensors the first part of next week.
Jasper County officials have been conducting daily observation of the site while EPA and DHEC were not onsite due to the hurricane. They will continue to monitor the site over the weekend and respond if flames are visible.
Extended Smoke Forecast through Monday, September 9, 2019:
Light winds and a fairly stable atmosphere may trap smoke near the surface in the vicinity of the Able Contracting facility during the overnight hours each night. Light and variable winds each night could shift the plume in any direction at any given time, but highest smoke concentrations are expected to be in close proximity of the fire, within about 1/4 mile of the facility. Beyond mid-morning hours (through sunset) each day, any remnant smoke in the air should disperse efficiently. Any significant smoke during morning hours will likely be transported towards the north within generally light southerly winds. Thus, the area near the intersection of Argent Blvd and Okatie Hwy are more likely to witness smoke if fire flare-ups occur. Smoke is not expected to be a problem during the afternoon hours each day. Please note that locations closest to the Able Contracting facility along Schinger Avenue are more likely to experience smoke at any given time.
The Able Contracting Information Hotline has been established to provide the daily forecast and allow community members to leave messages if they have additional questions. The Smoke Forecast Hotline phone number is 803-898-4262 or 1-800‐204-1842.
