Latest Update

Today has been a mostly sunny day with high temperatures in the mid-50s. Some smoke and steam has been visible during the loading/excavation process and water has been applied as needed. A compressed air cylinder was uncovered today that was still under pressure. The cylinder was dealt with in accordance with site protocol. Trucks are running smoothly with no noted issues.

All DHEC sensors are still reading in the “Good” range for the 24-hour average comparison to the Air Quality Index (AQI).

Please refer to the interactive DHEC map to access real time air quality information from all three DHEC sensors.

Total Trucks through 12/17 10,952*
Total Tons through 12/17 102,931*
Total Trucks on 12/18 139*
Total Tons on 12/18 1,085*
Trucks as of 3:00 PM 12/20 113
Tons as of 3:00 PM 12/20 1,104

Please note: The number of trucks leaving the site each day varies depending on the weather and firefighting activities. Also, the tons per truck are estimated on days when landfill receipts are not available at the time of this update.

We’ve used a combination of both triaxle dump trucks and dump trailers. Each dump trailer has the capacity of about three times that of the triaxle dump trucks.

*At the time of the page's publication, the landfill had not provided recent total numbers.

Operations at the site will shut down tomorrow afternoon for the Christmas holiday. During the break, the Jasper County Fire Service has agreed to check the site a couple of times a day and will spray water if needed. We also have contractor staff on standby to respond if Jasper County Fire Service thinks it is necessary. Normal operations will resume on Monday, December 30.

The next update will be published on Monday, December 30.

Smoke Forecast through Monday, December 23, 2019:

Air quality monitor data in the local area of the fire continues to show particulate concentrations in the good range. If fire flare-ups do occur, a northeasterly wind will likely push smoke plumes to the southwest throughout the days Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Any noticeable smoke during the overnight and early morning periods will likely dissipate by the late morning hours. However, given the latest trends in fire activity and continued fire suppression efforts, smoke is not expected to be a problem beyond locations closest to the Able Contracting facility along Schinger Avenue.

Reminder: The Able Contracting Information Hotline has been established to provide the daily forecast and allow community members to leave messages if they have additional questions. The Smoke Forecast Hotline phone number is 803-898-4262 or 1-800‐204-1842.
